Thus, the fact of the nurses’ frequent communication with patients results in the necessity of solving a number of ethical issues. To reduce the negative effects of the ethical challenges for nurses and to follow the interests of the patients, it is significant to use the principles fixed in the Position Statement of ARN on the Ethical Issues. The first aspect of the code is to address the patients’ rights (including the rights of minors) directly (ARN, 2012). Nevertheless, this question is rather controversial and requires its solution according to the statements that the rehabilitation nurse often acts according to the patient’s interests (advocate), and she should be aware of the importance of patients’ participation in the decision-making process (ARN, 2012). Moreover, the rehabilitation nurse should respond to the aspect of the patient’s confidentiality and privacy with references to the principles of autonomy, beneficence, and justice. The use of restraints and the peculiarities of the interactions with the patients with suicidal behaviors are also regulated by the ethical code of ARN. Such problems as the character of relations between nurses and patients and the elements of the health care reform are also limited by the norms of ARN’s code. The rehabilitation nurses should protect the rights of their patients, support them while solving the ethical issues, and help them in the decision-making process (ARN, 2012). The standards of the care emphasized by ARN ARN determines the basic standards of providing the nursing care which depends on the division of the staff of the rehabilitation nurses into the advanced practice nurses and the nursing assistive personnel. Early History of the Democratic and Republican Parties essays

Early History of the Democratic and Republican Parties essays The Democratic and the Republican parties between 1868 and 1890 had many of the same ideas. Although their support bases were from different parts of the United States, the two parties seemed to be seeing each other eye-to-eye and didn't disagree on nearly as many things as they would in the modern day, especially when it came to economic issues. Although they shared similar views, nevertheless they were extremely competitive with each other. In each election in this time frame, the outcome showed to be very close, which is unexpected because of the massive amount of voters that showed up on election days. In fact, nearly 80 percent of eligible voters turned out to cast a ballot, because of bribes and money they would earn by voting for a particular party. The Gilded Age was a time of scandals, bribes, and corruption and was full of enthusiastic political competition. After the great Civil War, the Republican party nominated General Ulysses S. Grant, who although was a great leader, had no political experience. The Democratic Party at this time, though, was extremely unorganized because they could only agree on one thing: the denouncement of military Reconstruction. In the next election, Grant would barely win by "waving the bloody shirt" by pure popularity (just beating the Democratic candidate, Horatio Seymour). Later, a majority of Grant's cabinet turned out to be corrupt, although the easygoing Grant could not see it. A sense of disgust was growing towards Grant, and by 1872, reformers set up the Liberal Republican Party and nominated Horace Greeley. The Democrats, to some surprise, also supported the candidate, who was set on ending Reconstruction. This campaign was one of great 'mudslinging' and Greeley was called an atheist, a vegetarian, a communist, and a signer of Jefferson Davis' bail bond. Grant, on the other hand, was called a swindler, a drunkard, and an ignoramus. Nevertheless, Grant crushed Greeley in the electi...

Crosby Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Crosby - Case Study Example Livingston assured that he would be monitoring the entire project and would be organising meetings for feedback. Discussion whether or not Livingston's selection of Emary as project manager was a mistake Tim Emary had expertise in the areas of scheduling and he was a competent planner. However he did not belong to any of the departments like the EDP department, the functional department or the project management departments. Thus, the instance becomes an unusual one where the project manager does not come from these departments and hence problem may arise. The problem behind selection of Emary was that he might not be able to deal with the problems that the company may come across while the project is on. If someone from these departments had been appointed these problems would not have occurred and hence appointing the right person for the management of projects is essential. In every project, a hierarchy is maintained in the management which depends on the project size, the sub pro jects under each project and different individuals would be required to do the supervise these undertakings. Now for each segment of the project different project managers should be employed who have their specific skills. But in this particular case a unique project manager is appointed and hence he may not be able to deliver and monitor so many tasks at the same time. Even if he had expertise in all the areas like computers or EDP or other functions it might have been feasible but Livingston himself admitted that he knew nothing about any of the segments of the project and hence his appointment is basically unfavourable for the successful execution of the project. Livingston should have appointed someone who had experience and basic knowledge about computers, MIS or EDP as well as good in delivering projects on time. The possible reaction of the functional employees to the appointment of Emary as project manager The functional employees would naturally react adversely to this situ ation. They would feel less motivated to work in the project because of this new entrant in the entire project scenario. They would be less committed to the duties that they would be assigned. However, they would not contradict the decision that their president has imposed on them but they might start non cooperation in their daily work and might dishonour the instructions that Emary might put to them. Slowly this will result in the deterioration of the quality of the project. Since Emary has been brought into the project as a scheduler and an expert in delivering projects on time, the employees might try to find out ways to make the pace in which the project is taking place sluggish only to prove in an indirect way that the president’s decision was wrong. They might also waste resources or not properly utilise the resources to make the project costly with the same motive in their minds. However, this kind of insufficiency in a project that is high-value can be expensive for the company both financially as well as the long lost reputation that the company aims at regaining. Impact of cost and time constraints on networking techniques and project schedules Execution of a high value project requires implementation of proper networking techniques like PERT, CPM etc. in order to schedule the entire activity in a time based way and find of the

ABC Clinic Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

ABC Clinic - Coursework Example From this paper it is clear that  the work structure of ABC Clinic has two major portions namely, minor surgeries and pre-operation consultation. The capacity of service production for ABC Clinic differs in both their service structures. The consultant doctors can check around 7 patients per hour and works for 5 days a week out of which every Wednesday is scheduled for training and development during the 1st half. Meanwhile, the minor surgeons can perform 4 surgeries per hour on average. Based on this information, it can be calculated that, each day around 56 patients are checked by consultant doctors and 32 surgeries are performed. However, as one of the minor surgeons is off for 2 weeks, the capacity of minor surgeries has reduced by half.   Another factor that influences the capacity of ABC Clinic is that each patient has different needs and thus, the time allocated for each patient is not steady. This study declares that  the activities performed in ABC Clinic after the pati ent is moved from the reception room has been shown. The actvities that follow have two key decision making nodes out of which one rests with the patient, while the other is managed by the consultant doctors. The consultant doctor has to decide if the patient is ready for the surgery or needs further tests and medication before the surgery is performed.  The actvities have a mandatory waiting period of 1 hour after the surgery has been performed.

Letter to the Instructor Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Letter to the Instructor - Essay Example Language reflects a culture and changes the meaning of words! My main objective in joining the course was to improve my basic writing and communication skills. I am glad to say that I am now able to express myself effectively and write clearly and to the point. I can state my opinions and argue about an issue. I now understand the meanings of things left unspoken in a conversation. Earlier, I was more interested in mastering simple English speaking skills than in writing. ENG 126 has made me realize that writing a language is the best way to begin â€Å"thinking† deliberately in that language. It is only when you set down words on paper that you learn to organize your thoughts and link them together. Seeing a word on the page impresses it in the memory and improves spelling skills too. I particularly love our textbook. It is so well organized that I find it very simple to use. I find the readings particularly appealing. As a person, I like to read and write about several subjects and not confine myself to a single domain. The variety of subjects the readings include make them very interesting and fun to read. The language of the readings is pretty simple. This gave me confidence and it was very easy to relate to the readings. I am also glad that the essays were not too long. The essays required for the class were of various levels of difficulty. I am most pleased with my persuasive research paper. I learned to collect material and to organize it effectively. I not only gained writing skills but also extended my vocabulary and gained in-depth knowledge on the subject of vegetarianism. I see that two opposing viewpoints can appear absolutely correct at the same time! A lot depends on the writer’s presentation. The essay I am least pleased with is my Letter to the Editor. While I am happy with my choice of subject, I now see that the letter could have been better organized.

With the improvement and development of the products, the company will be able to deliver the growth by enhancement of the culture which involves four aspects. These include the strengthening of the use of marketing as a key tool of management, which rewards the performance of the revenue, by focusing the investment on the businesses and localities where there is high potential for growth which can be achieved continuously when these aspects are implemented in an effective and efficient manner in the market.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The brand image of the company has been affecting the relationship between the consumers and the producers in the market. Everyone knew that maintaining brand image brings success to the organization and HSBC was equally strong to get that image. It managed to accommodate the variety at the product at local an international level. This also helps in establishment of a reputation, which is quite essential for the company to be familiar and for the market to react favourably with the company. The brand image helps to hold associations which are strong, favorable and unique. It also helps in tying up with stronger companies and gain reputation globally.

Personal Narrative - Music and I Essay -- Personal Narrative Writing

Music and I Ever since I was a small child, I have loved music. The strong, steady beats, the entrancing melodies, and the lyrics that vary between heart-warming and heart-wrenching have always had an unexplainable affect on my life. Music seems to have the ability to change certain aspects of my world. If I am in a foul mood, an angry girl band can make my rotten attitude even more irresistibly awful. When I am happy, any sort of upbeat, dance-to-me kind of music enhances my joy that much more. I love to study to classical music, daydream to classical music, even sleep to classical music. Through my teen years, I became a fan of the often melodramatic country music that is still preset on my radio today. No matter what kind of music it is, when I turn it on, my mood morphs easily into whatever kind of music I am listening to. Music has absolutely been an enormous part of my life and who I am. However, this is not to say that I have much musical talent. I did perform in the choir in elementary school, and I played the flute for four years through middle school, but one day I came to a simple decision. When it comes to music, I am a much better enjoyer of it than a producer of it. When I am alone in the car, my sing-along-to-whatever-is-on-the-radio voice is fab-u-lous. However, as soon as any else climbs into the car with me my talent suddenly dwindles. My larynx doesn’t seem to appreciate an audience when it is trying to perform. Thus, my musical enjoyment stems directly from listening. My love for music has existed for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my mom and I had a special song that she would sing to me if I was sick, sad, or sometimes just as a treat before bed. To this day, â€Å"You are My S... ...an beings. Although each person has a distinctly unique taste of music, people still like to listen to it and enjoy it. My own personal experiences and attitudes to music have stemmed from my own life and relationships. My new husband and I just finished putting up our very first Christmas tree together. I was pleasantly amazed when he flipped on the radio to Christmas tunes and began singing along to them with me. These holiday songs are only another example to me of how powerful music is. As soon as we starting singing while we were putting up ornaments on the tree, our moods were lifted easily from the stress of looming finals and another Christmas working in retail. Although this is the first year I won’t be spending Christmas at home, I know that all I will have to do is listen to the old familiar notes of â€Å"Holy Jolly Christmas† to feel right at home.

Personal experience in the war in Counter- Attack Essay

By considering one of the poems that you have read, explain how the poet presents their view of the conflict – ‘Counter-Attack’ Siegfried Sassoon presents his personal experience in the war in ‘Counter- Attack’ with raw brutal imagery of the battlefield, the numerous sensory feelings provoking terror and outrage at the war, coupled with the stark contrast of report-like statements to ultimately convey the futility of the conflict, and the massive waste of life. Sassoon immediately establishes the sense of emotional detachment in the conflict; the opening lines simply state that they had ‘gained (their) first objective hours before’, provoking horror at the fact that soldiers were forced to fight in inhumane conditions and ultimately were made to detach themselves from the terror of watching their friends being murdered. A semi-omniscient narration is maintained to establish the collective horror of the war, the fact that all soldiers would almost always face the same fate as the previous had and remains set throughout the poem as the contrast to the emotional detachment presented. The poet describes how at first even before the attack begins the soldiers are already ‘blind with smoke’, yet they are made to continue to work as soon as ‘dawn’ begins; all the soldiers are immediately forced to join in with the ‘clink of shovels’, a sign of the hard conditions of living in the trenches, while the militaristic onomatopoeia coincides with the perceived orderliness, such as the ‘bombers posted’ and ‘Lewis guns well placed’. The poet therefore establishes the horror of the almost methodical methods to which the war was fought, and that the death that would come later made to seem almost mechanical. Sassoon also emphasises that these soldiers are simply normal men, many whom are young and forced to fight when he describes how prior to the counter-attack, there was ‘a yawning soldier [kneeling] across the bank’; in order to keep their morale up, they are forced to become sardonic, sarcastically describing the weather as ‘the jolly old rain’, yet serving to reinforce the message that the conflict has forced people to become detached from their emotions and feelings. The horror of the battlefield is also clearly defined; Sassoon describes the average life in the trenches even before the counter-attack to be one ‘rotten with dead; green clumsy legs’. The use of ‘rotten’ inherently suggests that the battlefield is full of bodies, many of which are likely to be decomposing which only heightens the horror in which these soldiers must live their daily lives. They are in effect also forced to separate themselves from the sights; death is a normality in warfare, and the raw description of various soldiers ‘sprawled and grovelled’ along the trenches defines the sheer brutality they face. The men are reduced from strong, able men who were previously ‘high-booted’ to being helpless in the face of war, some even described as eventually dying ‘face downward’, a possible reference to the conflict only bringing doom to their lives. The battlefield is not only strewn with countless bodies, but also described as treacherous itself; the mud is personified as ‘sucking’ the fallen soldiers down into it with little remorse, creating a sense of the indignity of the soldiers’ deaths. The soldiers that are still alive are simply ‘[wallowing] like trodden sand-bags’, indication of the hopelessness and lack of control in the situation they face. They are also metaphorically ‘loosely-filled’, hinting possibly that these men are also physically as well as mentally exhausted, hence the soldier having ‘knelt’ against the bank. The sudden switch from the collection of soldiers to the single one in the second stanza points towards Sassoon’s idea of the wrongs of war; the stark reality that war costs numerous lives and each soldier is in effect a whole life, the one about to be lost in the war is as just as important. To describe the intensity of the conflict, the poet describes how this single soldier responds with such fear in that he becomes ‘mute in the clamour of shells’, simply reduced as he recoils from the initial shock of warfare. Yet rather than recovering from his initial shock, ultimately the soldier is described by Sassoon as helpless, as he ‘crouched and flinched, dizzy with galloping fear’, reduced almost to primal instinct when faced with such a large ‘strangled’ horror. The battlefield along with its weaponry ‘[spouts] dark earth and wire with gusts from hell’; the poet explains the terrible nature of the war, likened to hell wrecking its destruction onto the battlefield, and in the remnants of the carnage the soldier can only hear the ‘butchered, frantic gestures of the dead’ – an oxymoron to establish the fact that death on the battlefield is so sudden and brutal it is literally incomprehensible. Sassoon’s view of the conflict is described as being ultimately futile; the first stanza already indicates that there are numerous ‘bulged, clotted heads’ scattered throughout, grotesque imagery that also provides an ominous undertone to the counter-attack. These bodies are also described as ‘[sleeping]’ rather than the stark reality that they are dead, pointing to the normality of the situation. To add further to the futility, even the officer of the trench is ‘blundering’, somewhat dark comedy in the face of terrible times, and he continues only by ‘gasping and bawling’ in shock. In contrast to the ‘dead’ lifeless nature of the soldiers, it is the ammunition that is fully alive in this case; ‘bullets spat’ at them, ‘traversing sure as fate, and never a dud’, adding to the certainty of death in the conflict. The soldier Sassoon describes ultimately meets his fate in a spout of confusion indicated by the sudden ellipses in his thoughts: ‘and he remembered his rifle†¦rapid fire†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ Notably the soldier himself cannot remember to hold onto his own rifle – shock is combined with futility in that the soldier cannot arm himself and is therefore helpless, akin to almost all the other soldiers in the trenches. His fate is one that ends with him having ‘[bled] to death’. Heavy consonants throughout the line along with repetition emphasise the futile nature in which he dies: ‘Down, and down, and down, he sank and drowned’. The poem establishes Sassoon’s opinion of the conflict being one filled with horror, forced emotional detachment and ultimately the underlying futility of the war in the soldiers’ confusion and the mechanical killing presented. The poem never aligns with any set line structure in order to add to this confusion, and the poem is closed with the simple factual statement ‘the counter-attack had failed’, in line with the opening line to create a contrast and show the real brutal nature of war: people become numbers rather than the real human beings presented in the second stanza.

Speech on Environmental Issues Today Essays

Speech on Environmental Issues Today Essays Speech on Environmental Issues Today Essay Speech on Environmental Issues Today Essay Our Environment how can you and I help save it? Albert Einstein said Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better. Our planet is in trouble! Pretty much everywhere you look today you will hear or see something reminding you that our planet’s health is failing. If our planet where a person it would be about time to buy the burial plot and write out the last will and testament. Just a brief list of the things that is ailing her is pollution, acid rain, climate change, the destruction of rainforests and other wild habitats, the decline and extinction of thousands of species of animals and plants. nd so on. I think everyone in here can agree that all of these issues exist and that humans have caused them. Thankfully many of us are concerned about the future of our planet and unless we can find a way of solving the problems then the environment will suffer. I know this all sounds so depressing but we can’t get overwhelmed. Every one of us can do something to help slow down and reverse some of the damage. We cannot leave the problem-solving entirely to the experts we all have a responsibility to our environment. We must learn to live in way that will sustain our world like learn to use our natural resources which include air, freshwater, forests, wildlife, farmland and seas without damaging them. As populations expand and lifestyles change, we have to keep the world in a condition so that future generations will have the same natural resources that we have today. Here I am going to list just a few examples of the threats to our environment as well as some ideas to help you to do something about them. WasteWe humans create a lot of trash! Between 1992 and 2008 household waste increased by 16% and we now produce just under half a ton per person each year. Most of this trash is hauled away by the garbage man and buried in a huge landfill or it is burned. Both of these options are harmful in their own way. Is all our trash really trash? If you think about it, a lot of what we throw away could be used again. It makes sense to reuse and recycle our trash instead of just trying to solve the problem of where to put it!Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees, oil, coal and aluminum are used up in enormous amounts to make these products and the resources will one day be completely used up. So in order to cut down on the energy used lets reuse. What can you do? * Sort out your trash. Organic matter (e. g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc. ) can be put in to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertilizer for the plants. Aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers are often collected from our doorsteps, but other items such as plastic bottles, juice cartons and cardboard may not be, in which case they can be taken to nearby recycling banks. You can find out where they are by just searching on line. * Use recycled paper to help save trees. Chlorine bleach is usually used to make newspapers and this pollutes rivers. Its better to use unbleached, recycled paper whenever you can. * Take your old clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned to textile mills for recycling. * Try to avoid buying plastic. Its hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is to refuse to use plastic bags offered by supermarkets and use cloth re-useable shopping bags instead, or re-use plastic bags over and over again, until they wear out and then recycle them. Pollution The air, water and soil of habitats all over the world have been, and are being polluted in many different ways. This pollution affects the health of living things.Air is damaged by vehicle emissions, and power stations create acid rain which destroys entire forests and lakes. When fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal are burned to provide energy for lighting, cooking etc. they create polluting gases. Oils spills pollute sea water and kill marine life; chemical waste from factories and sewage, and artificial fertilizers from farmland, pollute river water, killing wildlife and spreading disease. What can be done? * Don’t litter. * Use less energy by switching off lights when rooms are not in use, not wasting hot water, not overheating rooms. Use a bicycle or walk instead of using a car when you can. Or rideshare, and use the HOV lane. * If you spot pollution, such as oil on the beach, report it. If you suspect a stream is polluted, report it to the local EPA office. . * Organic foods are produced without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides, preventing these pollutants from contaminating habitats and entering the food chain. So it may cost a little more but it is better for you and for the environment. The Greenhouse EffectCertain gases in the atmosphere, mainly carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorocarbons, act like the glass in a greenhouse, allowing sunlight through to heat the Earths surface but trapping some of the heat as it radiates back into space. Without this the Earth would be frozen and lifeless. However, due to the Human Effect ,greenhouse gases are building up in the atmosphere, causing a greater amount of heat to be reflected back to Earth. This results in an increase in average world temperatures and is already causing more droughts, flooding and extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes which we have all seen on the news. Some ways to Help * Dont waste electricity or heat. Electricity and heating are produced by burning coal, oil and gas and this action gives off carbon dioxide. The more we use the more we pollute. * Car fumes produce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide so try to cut down on car trips if possible. Use a bike or walk its good exercise for you too! * Recycle as much of your waste as you can. Methane, the most effective greenhouse gas, is released into the air as the trash in landfill sites rots. Now I realize we can’t all live on a farm and grow our own food and all drive smart cars. We Texans normally can’t walk or take a bike places because everything is so far away. My dream job has always been one that I could ride a bike to, that sounds funny but every little bit helps. Some other things I did were to change out all of my light bulbs with energy efficient ones, and reinsulated my house. This and other things save me money but they also save the environment. Let me leave you with one last thing: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

The eNotes Blog Well, Good Luck With That No Jobs inHumanities

Well, Good Luck With That No Jobs inHumanities Last week, the Modern Language Association (MLA) held their annual convention in Los Angeles, California. Some 8,000 professors, graduate students, and others in the humanities field were in attendance.   They shared papers, listened to lectures, and awaited word from the organizations executive director, Rosemary Feal, about the state of the job market for those involved in teaching and research. The news was not great, to say the least. Feal explained that the challenges facing the field include crowded classrooms, reduced budgets for salaries, research, and travel grants, as well as work furloughs. Humanities is at a low plateau, she said. Part of the problem in staying relevant in our competitive society can be attributed to a misconception that a humanities degree is not as relevant those in other disciplines.  Feal argues that this is not the case. Skills in communication and good writing are becoming more and more rare. If you have decided that you need to look for work outside  of education, there may be hope. Companies spend thousands of dollars revising documents written by executives with subpar  writing skills. Proving that you can save them money and time by being a great writer and communicator may open  doors for humanities professionals outside of academia. Want some statistics to take to a job interview? There are many documented cases of just how much, in both dollars and sometimes lives, that poor communication has cost companies. For example, in The Journal for Quality and Participation, Michael Egan reported that Computer manufacturer Coleco lost $35 million in a single quarter in 1983–and eventually went out of business–when customers purchased its new Adam line of computers, found the instruction manuals unreadable, and rushed to return their computers. An oil company spent hundreds of thousands of dollars developing a new pesticideonly to discover that the formula had already been worked out five years earlier–by one of the same companys technicians. He wrote his report so poorly that no one had finished reading it. A nuclear plant supervisor ordered ten foot long lengths of radioactive material. Instead of getting the ten-foot lengths it needed, the plant received ten one-foot lengths, at a cost so great it was later classified. Prof. Dorothy Winsor showed a history of miscommunication to be one of the root causes of the Challenger disaster in 1986. Of course, a lot of us in education are going to stick it out. Times will get better, surely. In the meantime, you can pick up extra classes at community colleges, look for freelance writing work, tutor, or become an editor at . We would like to hear your thoughts on the state of classroom education and your plans for the future. Will you stay or will you go?

Operations Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 1

Operations Management - Essay Example The researcher states that in order to achieve and sustain a competitive edge in the market environment, every firm must attempt to achieve consistency in its manufacturing or service delivery in all aspects. Therefore, the firm must identify areas that are necessary for inclusion in the operations management plan; plan on the approach to take in order to achieve the stated objectives; implement the strategy in accordance to the guidelines formulated in the planning stage; monitor the process; and improve by making corrections and adjustments to the process. If a firm can succeed in maintaining the operations management cycle for a sustained long period, then the firm is likely to achieve long term success due to preparedness to keep up and cope with market changes. Market changes include both macroeconomic and microeconomic market changes, both of which have an effect on a firm’s operations. Macroeconomic factors include changes in the aggregate economy of a vast geographical region including political changes; economic changes; social changes; technological changes; ethical changes and legal changes. Economic factors include the effects of the economy on business; social factors include changes in beliefs and perceptions as they relate to the business; technological factors centre the changes that affect the production process. Ethical factors include changes in perceptions of the difference between moral rights or wrongs; and legal factors are aspects of policy and legislation that have direct or indirect effects on the market. Microeconomic factors are the changes that occur in the market or industry and involve stakeholders like customers, suppliers, competitors and the public (Wong and Wong, 2007). A company must endeavour to satisfy the needs of customers, who are the core source of revenue for business; and attract and retain the attention of the public, which is composed of potential customers and investors. In addition, a company should build i ts credit worth to increase the likelihood of obtaining credit from suppliers even in the absence of funds to make cash purchases (Grafton, Lillis and Widener, 2010). The general idea is that a company should strive to align its inner environment with the changes in the outer environment. According to Slack, Chambers and Johnston (2007), a company should identify its level of success in the five main performance indicators including price, quality, speed, dependability and flexibility. This essay highlights the advantages and disadvantages of basing a performance management system on these five operations objectives. Implementation The first step towards implementation of a performance management system based on the five core performance indicators is an analysis of a company’s current performance against the expected performance. The aim of implementing such a system is to narrow down or close the gap between these two phenomena; the strategy being the use of these indicator s to achieve and retain a competitive edge in the face of a rapidly changing market. However, many scholars argue that the system should not be geared on achieving full functionality but a firm should focus on one aspect and do it to its best capacity. Specialisation enables a firm to perfect one aspect of its performance and uses it to outdo the competition in the market; especially by having a competitive edge derived from its effectiveness to achieve the optimal result in a performance indicator. However, using price, quality, speed, dependability and flexibility has merits and demerits (Zeydan and Colpan, 2009). Cost Optimisation of the performance indicator of cost has direct monetary benefits to a firm, as it enables the firm to reduce the cost of production by cutting down on inputs, mainly by adopting the use of cheaper alternatives or by reducing the quantity of input but maintaining the production output. In this case, the firm has the capacity to achieve high profit margi ns due to a higher difference between revenue and expenditure. Moreover, it has

Ethics, Law and Health Care Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Ethics, Law and Health Care - Assignment Example However, there is only a female doctor in the hospital at the time and therefore Omar finds himself in a dilemma in deciding what to do. This case raises the issue of ethics in health care. The main ethical issue in the case is on whether it is ethically correct to disclose the patient’s information to his mother and the doctor without going against the rights of the patient (Sullivan, 2009). Identifying Issues The main problem in this situation is that failure to disclosure the patient’s information may mean that he will not receive prompt medical attention. The other problem is to ensure that caregivers do not contravene the rights of the patient or the provisions of the Code of Ethics. Any action taken in this case should ensure that the involvement of the patient and his family (Curtin, 2004). Furthermore, the team of caregivers should also be involved in the action chosen. To address this dilemma, Omar should refer to the Code of Ethics that specifies all the ethic al standards that nurses should adhere. The Code of Ethics also serves an indicator to the community on the standards on human rights and ethical values expected from nurses (Fleming, 2007). The issues arising in this case are entrenched in an unwritten social contract between the public and healthcare givers. The family goes to the health care to receive treatment and care and health care givers are supposed to offer satisfactory care (Fleming, 2007). Evaluating the Issue The issues in the case of Omar and Tim touch on various areas discussed in the Code of Ethics (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2008b). For one, the issue is based on the requirement to ensure that nurses offer quality care to all people. Particularly, the nurse should recognize that all patients are entitled to quality care (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2008b). According to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008), Value statement 1(2): â€Å"Nurses recognize that people are enti tled to quality nursing care and will strive to secure them the best available nursing care. In the pursuit of this aim, nurses are entitled to participate in decisions regarding a person’s nursing care and are obliged to question nursing care they regard as potentially unethical or illegal†. Consequently, the nurse should ensure that Tim receives holistic care but in making decisions, it must be able to meet the threshold of being ethical and legal. The Code of Ethics also requires that nurses ensure that patients receive quality care from colleagues and therefore Omar has a duty to ensure that Tim receives quality treatment from the doctor. Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008), Value statement 1(3): â€Å"Nurses take steps to ensure that not only they, but also their colleagues, provide quality nursing care.† The other issue arising in this case discussed in the Code of Ethics is the importance of respect and kindness to self and others. Australian N ursing and Midwifery Council (2008), Value 2 (2): â€Å"Respect for people who are health consumers recognizes people who are health consumers recognize their capacity for active and informed participation in their own health. Nurses actively preserve dignity of the people through practiced kindness and recognizing the vulnerability and powerlessness of people in their care†. The way Tim is handled at the hospital can have implications on his dignity and
